How to Choose the Right Pallet Size

Measure Your Goods First

Before booking, measure the length, width and height of your goods once they're packed and ready to go. Don't forget to factor in any protective packaging such as bubble wrap, foam corners or cardboard sleeves.

Your goods must not overhang the pallet edges. If they do, you'll need to move up to the next size. Overhanging items risk damage in transit and may be refused by the carrier.

Consider the Weight

Each pallet size has a maximum weight allowance. This includes the weight of the pallet itself (typically 20-25 kg for a standard wooden pallet) and all packaging materials.

If you're close to the weight limit, it's worth stepping up a size. This gives the carrier more flexibility with loading and reduces the risk of surcharges for overweight consignments.

When to Use a Quarter Pallet

Quarter pallets are brilliant for smaller items that are too heavy or bulky for a standard parcel service. Think single car parts, small machinery components, sample boxes for trade shows, or a few cases of product. If your goods weigh under 250 kg and fit within 800 x 600 mm, this is your most cost-effective option.

When to Go Oversized

Oversized pallets are necessary when your goods exceed the standard 1200 x 1000 mm footprint. Common items include long steel sections, timber lengths, large body panels, industrial racking and commercial signage. We'll provide a custom quote based on exact dimensions and weight, so you always get a fair price.

Pallet Packaging Tips

Proper packaging protects your goods and avoids delays. Follow these tips for a smooth delivery experience.

Wrap Securely

Use stretch wrap (cling film) around the entire pallet and goods. Apply at least three layers to keep everything firmly in place during transit.

Protect Fragile Items

Use bubble wrap, foam inserts or cardboard dividers for fragile goods. Mark the pallet clearly with "FRAGILE" labels on at least two sides.

Label Clearly

Attach delivery labels to two sides of the pallet. Include the collection and delivery addresses, your booking reference and any handling instructions.

Pallet Size FAQs

Common questions about choosing the right pallet size, weight limits and packaging requirements.

Always round up to the next pallet size. If your goods are 900 mm long, for instance, a quarter pallet at 800 mm won't do — you'll need a half pallet at 1200 mm. It's better to have a little extra space than to risk overhanging, which could lead to damage or a surcharge from the carrier.

Yes, you'll need to place your goods on a suitable pallet before collection. Standard wooden pallets are available from most builders' merchants, hardware shops or online. Alternatively, many of our business customers keep a stock of pallets on site. If you're unsure, get in touch and we can advise.

Absolutely. You can stack as many items as you like on a single pallet, provided they don't exceed the maximum height and weight limits. Place heavier items at the bottom, lighter items on top, and wrap everything together securely with stretch film.

Pallets that exceed the stated weight limit may incur a surcharge or be refused at collection. We recommend weighing your goods before booking to avoid any issues. If you're unsure about the weight, it's always safer to book the next size up.

Not quite. A standard euro pallet measures 1200×800 mm, whilst a UK standard pallet is 1200×1000 mm. Both sizes are widely used in the UK. Our half pallet service accommodates the euro pallet footprint, while our full pallet service covers the UK standard size.
